Evaluation of circular business model: Theory of Change approach

The transition from linear to circular business models, in which companies match the financial return with positive socio-environmental impact, is increasing. From this perspective, investing in projects or organizations aligned with the principles of circularity can be characterized as impact investments. However, a challenge that emerges for these investments that is gaining increasing prominence in the academic and corporate environment is related to the development of an efficient evaluation model concerning its real impact on business. Based on the Theory of Change and in the context of circular business models, this paper aims at proposing an integrative tool to evaluate impact investments and applying it to a circular business of the home appliance segment. The articulation between the ToC and circular business models can support the structuring of an evaluation model on the production logic of the desired (economic, environmental, and social) impact. Enabling Factors and Strategies for the Transition Toward a Circular Economy (CE)

This study aims to identify and analyze the enabling factors and strategies for the structuring and diffusion of a circular business model. Circular model structuring involves several actors, challenges, and barriers. In this context, the present study allows discussion of the business structure in line with the principles of circularity and can contribute by mapping the factors and strategies to be worked for business development in the circular context, providing an overview and guidance for academics, businesspeople, and professionals. Through a case study method, the research allowed identification of the factors and an in-depth understanding of the strategies and drivers of circular business models; from the empirical research, it will be possible to identify opportunities that align with what is already known, but also what may be specific to the context of emerging countries to enable the circular model. https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/10/12/4628

Enhancing circular economy practices through the adoption of digital technologies

In transitioning from a linear economy model to a circular business, digital technologies can help manage the flow of restorative and regenerative resources. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the contribution of digital technologies, such as the internet of things (IoT), Big Data and Blockchain in the execution of circular economy (CE) practices and what mechanisms companies are adopting to integrate digital technologies into the circular context. The research method consists of an exploratory case study with a qualitative approach. Two prominent companies took part in the study. The results indicate benefits highlighted by companies, contemplate that Big Data analysis has improved performance in data processing and management, IoT has added monitoring and traceability to companies’ packaging, thus bringing efficiency to recycling, recovery, reuse and disposal, and the Blockchain provides traceability, security and reliability for the implemented practice. This study contributes by exploring the factors that will help explain the mechanism for implementing CE practices. The present study integrates two dimensions (i.e., CE and digital technology). In doing so, it expands previous studies on CE practices by adopting digital technologies. As a practical contribution, the companies in the study understood that integration with startups benefits the development of projects. The role of blockchain platform in enabling circular economy practices

The circular economy concept is gaining increasing prominence in academic, corporate, and government circles; however, its dissemination is still limited. There is a lack of studies that address strategies, practices, and enabling technologies guided by the principles of developing processes and products for a more rational use of natural resources, reducing consumption, or promoting their recovery. Technological resources can be a crucial issue in enabling the implementation of circular practices. Companies need to plan IT infrastructure and collaborative platforms that can connect them with different stakeholders and leverage digital technologies such as blockchain. This study aims to analyze platforms based on blockchain technology and their contribution to the implementation of circular economy practices, identifying the design, platform functionalities, and how the platforms are being integrated into companies’ circular economy programs. The research approach was qualitative, using multiple case studies. The results indicate that blockchain technology helps achieve circular economy practices by bringing transparency to the system and improving market position. The study also contributes to the emerging platform literature by exploring blockchain platforms with functionalities linked to executing circular practices such as Tokens and NFTs in the context of sustainability.https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/csr.2885
